Most deep-sky observing happens at low power. For an 8-inch f/6 Dobsonian (1,200mm focal length), the three useful eyepieces are: a 32mm Plossl (37.5x, 1.7° true field, the workhorse), a 17mm Plossl (71x, 1.1° field, for galaxies and small globulars), and a 10mm Plossl (120x, 0.7° field, for planetary nebulae and small galaxies). Three eyepieces, a red-dot finder, and a planisphere. Total cost around $300 on the used market.
The dark-adapted eyeWhy you cannot use your phone
The human eye takes 30–45 minutes to fully dark-adapt. A single look at a phone screen (even at low brightness) resets the adaptation to zero, and another 30 minutes is required to recover. The discipline is real: cover the phone in a red film, use a red flashlight, never look at a white light, and accept that the first 30 minutes of every session will be the worst. The last 30 minutes will be the best.
Averted visionThe trick that doubles the catalog
The most counter-intuitive skill in deep-sky observing: look slightly to the side of the object, not directly at it. The rod cells in the retina (responsible for low-light vision) are denser 10–20° off-center than at the fovea. Averted vision picks up objects that are 2–3 magnitudes fainter than direct vision. Practice on M33, which is famously "invisible" at direct vision and "obvious" at averted vision from a dark site.
The logWhy the second hundred is better than the first
Every observation should be logged. A simple ruled notebook works. The minimum log entry: object, date, time, sky conditions (Bortle estimate, transparency 1–5, seeing 1–5), eyepiece used, and one sentence on what you saw. After 50 entries, you will start to see patterns. After 200, you will be a measurably better observer than you were at 50. The log is the only part of the hobby that compounds.

The deeper reward. Deep-sky observing is a slow hobby in a fast world. The objects do not change. M51 is not more impressive tonight than it was 200 years ago, and it will not be less impressive 200 years from now. The reward is in the practice: in learning the sky well enough that you can find any object without a computer, in dark-adapting your eyes well enough that you can see what the eyepiece reveals, in logging your observations well enough that you can look back at year one and see that you have actually improved. It is the same reward the cabin empire is trying to find in software. The objects do not change. The observer does.
